The article discusses the clinical case of a non-compact myocardium (spongy myocardium, noncompaction myocardium) – a very rare form of congenital cardiomyopathy that occurs both in adults and children. It is characterized by excessive trabecularity with deep intertrabular spaces formation. Multiple trabeculaes form a wide non-compact spongy layer of the heart muscle, while a layer of a homogeneous contraction-capable myocardium remains thin. Such an altered structure of the heart muscle leads to a rapidly increasing deterioration of the contractility of the heart and the development in some cases of severe heart failure.
