Objective: to study cytogenetic changes in the esophageal mucosa and lipid peroxidation in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease in combination with metabolic syndrome.
Material and methods. 122 patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease in combination with metabolic syndrome were examined. Cytogenetic changes in the esophageal mucosa and lipid peroxidation and antioxidant protection were evaluated during the examination.
Results. Differences in the frequency of cells with cytogenetic disorders in mucocytes of the distal esophageal mucosa in the group of patients with infected N. pylori was almost twice as high, and the level of lipid oxidation products in patients with esophagitis exceeded normal values.
Conclusion. The study indicates that in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease in combination with metabolic syndrome, the inflammation process adversely affects the distal esophageal mucosa with respect to the genotoxicity of mucocytes, and the activation of lipid peroxidation occurs in all variants of the disease.
