The aim of this study was to investigate the oxidative stress in young patients with focal symptomatic and cryptogenic epilepsy and after the first onset of epileptic seizures.
Material and methods. The patients aged from 19 to 44 years were distributed into three groups, 30 patients in each: the patients after a few (first) epileptic seizures, the patients in the clinical remission that has lasted at least one year, and the patients with treatment-resistant epileptic seizures. In addition, the healthy control group included 20 virtually healthy persons. The parameters of the pro-oxidant status (TBA-reactive products) were studied, as well as the parameters of the antioxidant defense (AOD): the total superoxide-scavenging activity of the blood plasma, catalase, the total antioxidant activity of the blood plasma, and the reduced thiols (SH groups) of the blood plasma.
Results. Our study revealed no significant differences in the concentrations of TBA-reactive products in the blood plasma of epilepsy patients and healthy controls. As to the other parameters investigated in this study (concentration of reduced SH groups, total superoxide-scavenging activity of plasma, catalase activity), they were found to be significantly decreased in comparison with the control group, p < 0,05; for the total antioxidant activity of the blood plasma, p=0,008. In addition, some of the parameters displayed significant differences between different groups of epilepsy patients.
Conclusion. From the point of view of adaptation syndrome free-radical processes will be an essential component of stress reactions that manifest themselves immediately after the action of the stress factor (epileptic seizure) and persist in the future regardless of the course of epilepsy.
