Abstract. Smoking remains one of the significant modifiable risk factors for chronic non-communicable diseases arising both throughout Russian territory and in the Republic of Mordovia. According to the results of scientific research, its prevalence remains heterogeneous depending on the geographical location and economic level of the region.
The aim: to study the prevalence of smoking in the Republic of Mordovia according to the data of ESSE-RF-3 (Epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors in the regions of the Russian Federation) in 2021–2022 and compare it with the results of health survey and primary medical examination performed in the region in 2022.
Material and methods. Data obtained within the framework of ESSE-RF-3 study in the Republic of Mordovia were assessed. Study participants (n = 1811) were surveyed using a standard questionnaire. The behavioral risk factor – smoking – was analyzed. The results of primary medical examinations and medical surveys in the Republic of Mordovia in 2022 (n = 222,706) were studied. Further the data from these two studies were compared.
Results. According to ESSE-RF-3 in the Republic of Mordovia, the prevalence of smoking consisted of 13.5% in the overall group; it was higher among male than among female population (54.5 and 15.5%, respectively), regardless of age and place of residence. The highest smoking frequency in the group of females was fixed at a young age (35–44 years, 8.4%). Among male individuals, there are significantly more smokers in two age groups: 35–44 years (29.2%) and 45–54 years (29.5%). During preventive medical examination and medical survey in the Republic of Mordovia in 2022, only 6.3% of people were identified with the risk factor “smoking“, which is lower comparatively to ESSE-RF-3.
Conclusion. ESSE-RF-3 study made it possible to assess the prevalence of smoking in the Republic of Mordovia with the subsequent determination of needs and priorities for population prevention at the regional level.
