Analysis of smoking behavior in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Purpose: to study smoking behavior in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and identify its relationship with pulmonary disfunction.
Material and methods. The article presents the results of a study of smoking behavior in patients with COPD. A total of 36 smoking patients with moderate to severe COPD who were hospitalized in a pulmonary or therapeutic Departments for the treatment of exacerbation of the disease were examined. The average values of the Tiffno index were 57±2,8%, the FEV1 index was 44,4±5,4% of the due. An in-depth study of smoking behavior was conducted using the D. Horn questionnaire translated by Leonov A., analyzing the results of nicotine addiction tests (Fagerstrom test) and smoking cessation motivation. Anamnestic data on the age of onset of smoking, smoking intensity, the results of a study of smoking behavior were subjected to a correlation analysis with spirometry data.
Results. The results showed that 41.7% of people made another attempt to stop smoking during this hospitalization. All noted a decrease in smoking intensity over the last year from an average of 21,4±2,1 cigarettes to 9,6±2 cigarettes at the time of the survey. Previously 4±0,5 attempts were made to quit smoking 86,1% of respondents, the duration of withdrawal was from 1.5 to 12 months. The main types of smoking behavior were: 80,6% – «support», 52.8% – «thirst» and «relaxation». Positive average correlation strengths between different types of smoking behavior, the age of onset of smoking and the FEV1 index, the Tiffno index and the degree of nicotine dependence were revealed.
Conclusion. Thus, the revealed features and patterns substantiate an individual approach to the anti-smoking counseling of patients with COPD and will be useful in developing a personal smoking cessation program in each case.
